Most of the online sources as well as AKC guide to growing healthy dogs say that puppies are to be fed three times a day until they are 6 months old, after which time they should be fed twice.

At the same time, some posters said that their vets recommended them feeding their puppies puppy formulas until they are a year old.

So, I suppose the timing of their growth changes depending on the activity. It is probably similar to human babies. They get to experienc sertain adult things earlier than the others.
