There is a strap that attaches to their harnesses. I have a small car so I put a big pillow between the car seats (Simon likes to attempt to crawl out as far as he can go). The strap is adjustable though. The monkeys are both 7 pounds and wouldn't fit in 1 comfortably so I have always had 2. I put a blanket in there with them too for extra warmth.
The car seat itself is held in place by the seatbelts so it's super secure.
