I think it is great that he is doing so well!
I live in an apartment that has a lot of cars nearby, so I couldn't safely do that... plus I don't really trust my neighbors - there are so many kids that run around outside too that seem to be kind of destructive. :P (we've had our car scratched up, things left behind the wheels, things written on the outdoor steps, etc. - we can't wait to move!)
I'm also lucky that my cats ignore my furniture except to sleep on it. I think having two huge cat trees might help, lol... but you never know. They may sneak to scratch the furniture when I'm not looking! O_O
