Very cute! I might have to try something like that. I like the idea with the ribbon in the top so you could pull it closed a little. That way it's still big enough to pull over their heads.
Isn't it frustrating to come out too small though. When Chloe was a little speck, I crocheted a small sweater for her, and the first one was too small--even with how tiny she was. Now I look at those two little sweaters and I can't believe she's grown so much!
