My Gypsy is a hyper little bitch (cool to say that-- she is, after all, a female). With her and my male Capone it takes me holding her for the whole mating. Not forcefully, but to help quite her while he penetrates. I also hold them until the breeding is finished, I don't want him to harm her trying to get loose. I couldn't imagine not holding them until it is completed, I would be afraid of tearing of the vagina.
