I've never heard this either but was interested about it and did a search. I can't find anything on dogs, kidneys and sherbet but you can find it about humans. It has to do with Phosphorus and Calcium. When you have kidney problems you need to keep Phosphorus low but the body has a problem getting the needed calcium and can draw it from your bones. Sherbet is low in Phosphorus but has Calcium.

I could be completely off on this though. Look it up and see what you think and ask your vet about it again.
