I think her putting the pit down is making it harder on the son. He might end up thinking it was his fault somehow. Make sure she lets him know that it wasn't his fault. Some dogs are more aggressive than others when it comes to their things.
I'm sure if it's a puppy she'll be able to find him a home. She can try craigslist, a rescue, or a no-kill shelter. Just make sure that she tells them the dog needs to be an only pet, no child home.
