I will be taking JoJo on a plane in the future but I have been preparing him the best I can. Since you are leaving next week you don't have a lot of time.
First, check with the airline as already stated since each has different requirements. I am flying within the country and still need the vet certificate and also their is no restriction to how many animals are on my flight. Get their bag size requirement as well. I am also getting an aisle seat so we have a little more room.
I have been preparing him by getting him used to the bag he will be traveling in and going for car rides where the bag is under my legs to simulate what will happen in the airplane (obviously I am not doing the driving!). We go for some longer rides as well but not as long as the plane ride will be.
I am also getting him used to a belly band (he is seven months old and hasn't worn one before this) in case of an accident but of course I can't prevent anything more than peeing! At least the initial "sniffing and what is this" scenerio will be over since he has worn it before.
I also plan on bringing some new toys and special treats and will try to restrict food and water a few hours before the flight (I think I read somewhere 5 hours with no food and water is advisable, but I don't think that will work for us). I will also try to play with him quite a bit before we leave so he is tired.
Also, I am having my clothes shipped ahead of time so I do not have to wait for luggage. By then I am sure he will be beside himself and want out!
I can only hope he will behave!
One last thing, I will not be doing this but my vet said since he is in good health she could prescribe a sedative but I am afraid to do that.
Good luck!
