I don't think the small amount of gel you use will dry the hair excessively. It hasn't on Ruby. The time it takes to grow out can be different depending on how fast your yorkies hair grows. Ruby is 13 mos. old and most all of her hair is long enough now to either go up in the topnot or smoothed down over her muzzle. She has never had it cut since I got her at 5 mos. old. I don't know if the breeder had cut it before, but I don't think so.
