I think the best way to get them to follow you closely is to train them by keeping them on a leash for the first several months. Let them know that the purpose of a walk is keeping up with you. Once she gets used to that, you can try taking her off leash. When you do, here's a game that helps:

Have a friend hold her, and you walk several paces away. Shout "come" as your friend lets go, and shower her with praise and treats when she gets to you. Gradually increase the distance and even hide for her. It's a great game and teaches her a good habit.

That said, I've recently been told that some of Eddie's behavioral issues (he beats up Jack occassionally) could be because I give him too much freedom. I've been told that our walks should always be on leash, so I'm going back to square 1 for a little while.
