Dogs are not susceptible to certain 'nasties', such as salmonella, as we humans are - regardless of what your vet may tell you. They have enzymes in their mouths that protect them, as do their ancestors, the wolf - perfect for prey model diets. Being out for 12hrs - not a problem. Some dogs prefer their RAW meat a tad on the 'ripe' side

Many, many people feed their dogs and cats RAW as a regular diet. I have been feeding RAW for four years, and am convinced the switch from the "better brand" commercial 'foods' literally saved my 12y/o Mozart's life. Abbie seems to be faring well into her 14th month on RAW meat and meaty bones, too.
I agree that it
is time to secure the trash can, however: to save him from getting hold of
cooked chicken bones - which
can harm him. Canines' digestive systems are equipped to digest RAW bones, but COOKED bones can splinter, and tear them up.
