A good Vet. would never put a dog under without doing a test to see if they will do ok.
Before letting the dog be put under, ask your Vet. to put him on Clindamycin Hydrochloride drops. They are given twice a day for five days, then once a month for five days. It will take care of any gum problems and take away the bad breath. This is what my 15 year old Chihuahua takes because we don't want to put her under unless there is no other way.
