hot spots can be caused by really anything. she could have had an itch and started licking it which cause the spot. the word 'hotspot' is given to anything that is an imflammed spot on the dog which is red and/or itchy with hair loss.

and i'm sorry to say, a hotspot isn't an emergency really. I work at a vet's office and tho we wouldn't have been rude about it, we probably wouldn't have seen she either if we were totally booked up. hot spots can wait if there are actual emergencies that need to be seen.
