Funny you should mention "fingertips." At least one YTer makes her own booties by cutting off the fingertips of gloves and then strapping velcro over the top to keep them on. She doesn't even sew the velcro to the bootie, just wraps it around.

The ones she showed me were cotton work gloves, which might get wet in the winter. But a pair of children's fleece gloves would stay warm when wet.
