I have a silver/tan female and a black/tan male. Their last liter was half and half. When two of them left at 14 weeks you could see some silver starting to show on their backs and on the other two, they were still all black and no silver on the backs. The ones with silver showing did have lighter colored roots appearing on their heads around 7 weeks of age and the pups that are staying black on the back have a darker grey and tan on their heads. My female was a lighter silver but seems to be darkening a little and she is almost 3 years old. Her roots are still changing. It seems like every half inch of new root growth is a different color than the rest of her coat.
