I think it helps to definitely see both parents (not a guarantee though) and also past litter results. Also checking the undercoat of the pup (older than 3 mos) sometimes works - if there is a lighter color at the base closest to the skin then the pup will probably have the steel blue color - at least in my past experience. I always thought the black and gold colors were pretty too - but I do agree that the blue coats are easier to maintain and now I prefer them again. Either way I love the breed and their personalities. Good luck to you.
