I had this problem with Jake (funny enough after he got sick and then made a full and healthy recovery).
I found a long walk on a night to be most helpful.
He was always pumped for about 30 mins to an hour after his walk, but then would calm right down for about 3 - 4 hrs.
Failing that ... try a 2nd dog ... really helps to keep them both worn out
