We free feed.... did also with our poodle.... and have never had any negative experiences with it. I tried the scheduled feedings when Tatum was a baby because of the housebreaking issues but gave that up quick.... she just wouldn't eat it when I put it down and we are not always on the best schedule at home anyway for me to remember to put it down at a certain time. Luckily, we didn't have problems with the housebreaking. That's the only reason I considered it.
My sister has three medium - large dogs in the house and she schedule feeds them but they wolf it down in under a minute when she puts it down. I just think small breeds are different in that aspect.
