I don't know if the brush caused the red patch, but it sounds possible (like a rug burn maybe). Sissy is almost 18 months old and her fur is just now shy of 1/2 way to the floor. Her hair seems to grow impossibly slow, but it is growing. Make sure you are using a quality shampoo and conditioner and some kind of conditioning spray inbetween baths to prevent mats and breakage and his fur should continue growing. Hope this helps.
