I think it not only an age thing; it's a size thing as well. They definitely have an easier time going up then coming down. We have many steps around the house, and the only ones he is allowed access is a set of 4 steps. Even though he uses them quite often he still has tumbles, but because they are not high there is no real danger. There is no way he's ready for our outdoor steps; one wrong move and he would wind up on the cement. Just because they are not afraid to try something, it doesn't mean they are ready to do it. Joey's still less than 4 pounds, but each ounce he's gained has made a difference in his step climbing ability.
