All blades consist of two pieces. The bottom piece moves back and forth and this is how it cuts. Do not take them apart. A #7 blade cuts the hair quite short and would be appropriate for a schnauzers back. Don't use the #7 to clip your schnauzers ears. The ears are very thin and the edge can get caught by the clipper pretty easily. Do you have a #10? If you want the ears clipped short use that. It's safer. Also use a #10 for sanitary areas. After you run the clipper over the surface of the ear (inside and outside) trim the edges with sissors. Protect the ear leather with your fingers and point the tip of the sissors toward the tip of the ear not the base of the ear. You don't need a #30 or #40 blade. The higher the number the shorter the cut. A #30 or #40 would shave your dog bald. I hope this made sense.
