OK, I just got this flat iron in today!

I have never used a flat iron before. I got it b/c I wanted to make nice waves or curls. NO CLUE how to do this. I guess I have to watch the DVD that came with it. I did turn the heat up to 420 and it did make nice root volume. My hair is straight already, so I don't think I will be using it as a typical straightener though...
One question - hopefully someone can answer. I bought this Brand New, Never Opened from a very reputable seller on e-bayer. Before I ask him, maybe someone here can answer this - about ANY FLAT IRON:
In the close position, the very end is tight - BUT I have to press harder down to make the middle and lower end (near the handle) clamp down tight. Does this make sense??? Is this how they are? Or should the 'whole' flat iron part clamp down evenly with minimal pressure?
