This is just their animal instinct. They do it because that what they would do in the wild to protect their food. Same thing when they poop, they throw dirt on it. It's funny, because after he goes in the pad, he gets out of the box and grasps the carpet with his paws like he would do in the dirt. We call it "the carpet dance" because if you see him, it's like he is doing breakdancing.
