Thanks for everyones input. After visiting the shelter and talking to a lot of people there we are going with kittens. Some people even have birds and cat and have had no problems. We are going to wait until the end of March/begining of April when kitten season begins. I was told that I could foster the kittens to see how it works out. I was told that kittens have a real rough time in shelters and a lot don't make it. The kids and I have already started to kitten proof the laundy room, thats were they will stay when no one is home. Hopefully everything will work out and we can save a couple in mermory of our Baby cat.
