I was curious how many heats a yorkie is supposed to have per year. I have three and they all have had just one heat per year. My oldest yorkie, 5 yrs old had emergency surgery this past Thursday for pyrometra(sp), and had her uterus taken out because it was full of liquid. She was running a temp of 103 - that was the only thing that red flagged me. So I'm back at step one with my furbabies. I want only the best for them and so I try to educate myself as much as possible. By the way, the other two girls are being scheduled for spaying as well.

I know there is some controversy over the benefits of spaying before they go into heat, but I think with litle yorkies especially, it is okay to let them have a heat because the risks of the surgery outweigh the benefits of spaying earlier. Just what I've heard. My vet may me feel stupid when I said Chai was too young and too small to spay at 5 months, but I have switched vets!! |
