I've given many a rescue Yorkie a name simply because they did not come with one. The responded quickly to their new name, and seemed to enjoy it too. I've heard that if you get a rescue that has been abused, mistreated or didn't have attention that it should have, you should change it's name, otherwise it will be a bad association. I don't know just how true this is, but when I heard this I changed a couple fosters names.
