I just realized I didn't answer your question.

The reason vets give them cones is so that they can't lick the stitches. Licking it can cause infection and some dogs go so far and biting off the stitches so if he is not constantly licking the area, you should be fine. As I said, I didn't give Zoe the cone after his neuter or his LP surgery.
