I would go with a kitten. Cats learn to fear dogs from the reaction of their parents. If you get a kitten that was never taught to fear dogs then they should play with your puppy just like another cat. The bird this is a different story. Hunting birds is instinct for a cat. We had a cat that had never been around vermin, yet when I got a hamster, she spend day & night stareing at him & trying to get into his cage & finally gave him a heart attack. So I don't know about the bird/cat thing.
