OH GIRL - I know EXACTLY what you mean, LOL. Stedman is the same way! He WILL actually speak though, AND sit when you tell him - regardless of whether or not you have a treat in your hand...BUT, he REFUSES to "walk, walk, walk" or, "spin around" if you don't give him something for it, LOL. I guess THOSE commands are just a little too much work to do if you don't get anything in return
