Latte does this all the time. It does sound like a hairball, but it's really a collapsed trachea. My vet called it a backward sneeze. When I did some ressearch on the internet I was able to not stress about it. When she does it, I gently cover her nose to make her swallow. That stops it. I thought she had asthma and all sorts of other horrors. She's 4 and fine!
