With the picture open in iphoto, go under file and EXPORT. Depending on your version, it will either ask you to size the photo (make it 400 x 600 pixels) or to select the quality of the photo (medium).
Export it to your desktop. It will come out as a jpeg, but that's what YT wants. Then attach it through "manage attachments" off a message.

Thanks too ... I use a Mac, and while I'm quite proficient with computers I wasn't aware that iPhoto could be used to reduce the size of an image.
Because of my work I have a paid version of Photoshop, so would use that instead.
