After he drags the bed in there, he curls up in it. It has been going on for weeks. He has several beds and they are washed frequently (almost daily in some cases) so I don't think this is the case.
I thought maybe it was the close quarters in the play pen, but he does it in the much larger ex-pen as well. Maybe he likes the walls of the litter box, I don't know... Of course he also has a tendency to eat/play with his poop if we don't realize that he did it and remove it right away. I guess my idea of gross and his idea of gross are two different things.
