Hi, the main thing to know is to (obviously) keep her away from males. Don't let her go out into your yard
alone (even if you have a fenced yard). Rocky can jump over a 4 ft fence with no problem and our friends 2 blocks away have 2 male dogs that know when Sunnie's in heat. I've saw some Lhasa Apso/Golden puppies here this summer that came as a great surprise to the owner of the Lhasa momma when she found the 2 of them together in the back yard. The Golden scaled a 6 ft fence.
Maggie was messy. She tried to keep clean but when she would get up in the morning you could tell where she slept. Sunnie just spots and the only way I can tell is if I check her with a tissue.
I tried the panties with the liners and Maggie would pull the liners out and shred them and both of them can wiggle out of them.
You asked real good questions. Be patient, good luck. It'll be over with in a couple of weeks.
