I have 7 and 4 year old boys. We have never had any problems. My kids were born into a home with a 6 pound maltese. So they learned from day one how to treat animals. They are both very gentle and caring to them. They aren't aloud to pick them up. They have to sit on the floor and play with them. Now teaching the YORKIE to be gentle and caring is another story! But Tinkerbell and my & 7 year old are the best of friends! You should see my son tell her to sit and give her a treat. It's so cute!

But you can totally tell what kids have not grown up with animals. When I take my maltese Chloe to the park (she is the gentlest and most well trained of my dogs), kids just run over and hover over her and are very pushy and overbearing, and she gets a little scared. She loves kids and would never bite, but I don't like her to feel that way. I usually tell the kids that she loves it when they sit down and let her come to them. No grabbing and being loud. If they don't listen I pick her up and tell them goodbye.
