Lex is a standard sized yorkie so about 6 months or so I started regulating his feeding so I could get the potty training down. Honestly I think it depends on your dog and his/her feeding needs. Lex would eat two times a day at that point anyhow. He still only eats twice a day now even if leave the food down. I think it's good to see how they like to eat. Now that we have Lulu who is an itty bitty thing I leave food down because being a little monster she only eats a kibble at a time so she can eat at her own pace.
Honestly you need to see what your doggie does.
