Sorry you are going through all this!
Have you thought about putting a stop pmt on the extra check that you issued? Although it would cost (most banks charge around $30.00), it would free up some cash. You would just need to let the mortgage company know, so they don't charge you a return check charge. They are usually pretty understanding, and some banks (if asked nicely) will even stop pmt for no charge if you give them a nice, sob story.
