I do exactly the same although Joey's command is "Where are you supposed to be?".

He has a little bed in the kitchen. He will down/stay on that while we eat. I began by tossing him pieces of kibble (never human food from the table!) every few minutes to reinforce his good behavior and gradually lengthened the time he has to wait for his rewards.

On his own, he has generalized that behavior to when I am cooking. I've never given him that command while I cook, but one day looked up and noticed him in a down/stay on his bed while I cooked (with his eyes boring holes in me! ). Such a smart dog!!!
