I just happened to do it today because I got distracted and forgot to brush first and found out it was actually better (for me anyway)
I also don't brush before bathing... Bathing seems to really separate Pepper's hair (I slather him in conditioner and move on to washing his head, then rinse it off again and again and again and...). I pat him dry with a towel and blow dry until he's almost dry. But I brush him later, he gets so hyper I let him run and play for a while after his bath. Then I comb him and most places the comb just glides through easily. It's working fine with me...
edited: But hee's never had long hair, before the last haircut it was 2-3 inches long
