Personally I feel that finding a good mentor, someone you respect and admire, could be more beneficial than a paid therapist.
There may be some theapists like that out there, but I doubt it's the norm, I know it wasn't for me. I will always suggest counseling from a professional...it's good to get problems in the open and to be taught how to deal with them. It's been many years since I sought help, but some of the tools I was given still help me with things today.
