More than just the size of the sire goes into determining the size of the pups at adulthood. There's the genetics form the sire's parents and grandparents, etc. and the genes from the damx parents and grandparents. It is good practise to keep the sire smaller than the dam but the only helps to safeguard her and is no guarantee. I had a 12 lber once that had no large dogs in his 5 generation pedigree which was filled with champions. He started out small but just kept growing, 5 lbs at 12 weeks and 10 lbs. by 6 monthes. He must have been a throw back! The paring was repeated twice and such a large dog was not thrown again! Go figure!?!
