Petland... the chain of pet stores that always seems to have puppies...
http://www.petland.com/
In store, they try to sellyou that they only buy from reliable breeders, never puppy mills. They charge $1400 for a Yorkie pup. Any store, any parents, same price. And they buy their puppies from anyone- it is entirely up to the individual store manager. The absolute top price they pay for a Yorkie puppy is $500, so they are banking on a $900 markup.
The breeder in Iowa would not let us see the parents of the puppies. That was one thing I did not so much like. They were not keen to anyone going in the nursery facility. It was a large building (like an upscale barn) and they had several females actually due quite soon that would get upset at strangers waltzing in and out.
We did get to play with a whole bunch of Yorkie puppies however. Until we found the one(s) we wanted. The breeder was Knapp Creek Acres.
One word of caution: Petland does have a 72 hour return policy. That's a little weird to think of, as a puppy is like a pair of shoes or something. But it is a little comforting. When we got Lucy and Tucker home fromIowa, Lucy was being very very aggressive and teritorial to the 8 cats we have. To the point that we called the breeder and inquired about any kind of return policy if the puppy did not work out. I don't know how any other breeders work it, but Knapp Creek is pretty firm onthe all sales final part. They would rather you re-sell the puppy than return it. That is how I know so much about Petland; I had to look into all my options in case Lucy did not work out. Fortunately, she did. Actually she really grew on everyone so much, including the cats, I can't see life without her. She and her spazy/hyper ways just took some getting used to (is there a smiley face with crossed eyes I can use here?)
I was not so crazy about a breeder who didn't care enough for the pup to take it back, but I can see the point, not knowing all what it could have been exposed to.
btw, I don't live in the city anymore. I moved waaay out to Lake in the Hills (by Crystal Lake) so maybe they don'thave Petlands in the city?
