My fur kids **are** my real family members. And as far as choosing them over what you deem "real" family members.... I will say this much. My mother-in-law probably qualifies as a real family member to you. But she is a nasty example of a human being. I would choose a boa constrictor over her any day, lol!
My babies went with me on Christmas to my mother's and the whole family was there- a small bunch though. They basked in the attention.
