Exclamation In The News: Dental Vaccine For Dogs

From my local paper today........

In October, Pfizer Animal Health announced it had formulated a vaccine intended to help prevent the development of periodontal disease in dogs.

Periodontal disease - gingivitis and periondontitis - causes inflammation and infection that can lead to tooth decay and loss, as well as severe gum and bone damage. The American Veterinary Dental Society says dental disease can also increase risks of heart, liver and kidney problems.

The society reports that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of dental disease by the time they're 3 years old. Therefore a dog's bad breath doesn't necessarily mean he ate something stinky, but that bacteria in his mouth may have accumulated to the level of infection.

The American Veterinary Dental Society hasn't issued an opinion about the vaccine, a spokesman says, but is referring questions to Pfizer.

Veterinarians typically recommend that people try to ensure their pets' dental health by brushing their teeth daily (with toothpaste and brushes created for animals) and having their teeth examined at regular vet visits. They also say pet owners should keep an eye out for bad breath or changes in an animal's eating habits.

With the new vaccine for dogs (there's no word on one for cats), Pfizer aims to add another element of defense. The Porphromonas Denticanis-Culae-Salivosa Bacterin is formulated to protect against the buildup of the three main bacteria (which are listed in the vaccine's name) that lead to periodontal disease, according to Pfizer Animal Health.

A dog's first vaccination would involve two doses three weeks apart, Pfizer says. The company points out that is hasn't determined how long the vaccine will be effective. Right now, it recommends revaccinating a dog at "six month and twelve month intervals".

Veterinarians will begin offering the vaccine in 2007. If you are interested in more information, contact your local veterinarian or look online at www.pfizerah.com; search keywords "dental vaccine".
