Well yes, that's true. If you don't have a long good history with your vet, I agree that you may want to get another opinion.
Another thing to consider is that something may have been lodged in the little fellow's gums and was decomposing. That can also cause a fetid odor. But I would think your vet would have mentioned that

Just keep a close eye on him and check that baby breath frequently for awhile. Poor little babies really need their mommies to watch over them don't they.
