When you work, you'll have to leave your dog alone at home and he'll be fine. Look at this the same way. My Debbie stays in the kitchen with a baby gate across it when left home alone. She has her food, water, pad and bed and I think she sleeps the whole time. She's safer that way than what your puppy went through today.

You might be worrying for nothing though. Like you said, next year he will be bigger and might be able to handle the excitement much better. Debbie is only three pounds and I've taken her to my sister's son's birthday party and she isn't fazed at all. I keep a very close eye on her and will hold her so she doesn't get stepped on.
