I think it'd be better to leave the pup at home. Even if it's for 12 hours or so (but not in a cage). He'd be much more comfortable in the house where he feels familiar and has his food, toys and bed than being in the middle of craziness of a family function. They get stressed very easily, and 4 months is a very young puppy, still. Being home alone isn't the perfect situation but, all in all, he'd be better off there...
