After posting, I did find a couple hand sew ideas (they suggest using a heavier thread...forgot the name off hand). I saw some with using a fleece material. I'm going to try it. I want to stay off the machine because I'd like to do it on my breaks at work.

Hi, when my girls first learnt to sew, I had them hand stitch in the beginning and back stitch as they went along, They had no problem with it and it came out fine. On the fleece I think I would not do a real small stitch rather a little larger and then back stitch do another stitch back stitch, continue on this way. Have fun sewing. By the way there are good sites on here in learning to knit, if you pm me I can give you one that you might like. Patti
