I had a small parrot (a Concure) that I had to rehome when I got my little Yorkie pup.
My parrot loved getting out of his cage. He loved to spend time with people and play on his playgym.
He was clipped and generally fluttered to the floor when he was startled or tried to fly. This is when we had problems. As careful as I was with my new little pup - whenever my bird got on the floor - that little Yorkie would totally instantly appear out of no where - and starting trying to play with the bird. Of course, his playing - (pouncing on) - could have killed the little bird or hurt him very quickly.
About the 4th time - I got to the bird before any damage was done - I thought to myself that I just had to find him a new home. Because if anything every happened to him, I would never forgive myself.
I hadn't had the bird a long time - I had him about 6 months and had the pup about 2 months before I decided to rehome the bird. He did go to a wonderful wonderful home - and I can't believe how much I miss him... every day still. He was an absolute playful affectionate little doll - and as smart as can be.
But - my other two dogs never went near the bird if he ever landed on the floor - they usually went the opposite direction...
I would think that a larger parrot could pretty well hold its own with a little dog - but I sure can't be sure about that.
It will be interested to find out what others have to say.
