I think you'll be thrilled. I went darker from blonde and have settled on auburn with blonde hi-lights. A few years later, my sister-in-law went from blonde to something closer to her natural color. Both of us are very fair skinned (although our skin tone is completely different) and we both love what we've done.
To get used to it, try a slightly darker shade with highlights. It won't seem like as much of a shock to you at first!

Oh, I would never dream of doing it myself!! I am too picky about my hair to screw it up!!
