Embarassed Update On Tia & Cali

Tia had her surgery on Friday (removal of 2 retained baby teeth) and it went very well!! She is already back to her old, sweet self. The doctor also commented on how sparkling white her teeth are! I was very proud.

Now about Cali ... she was supposed to be spayed, have any retained baby teeth removed and have 2 dew claws removed. But all 3 vets refused to operate on her. In fact, they said absolutely not! They said she's an extreme high risk. They weighed her and she is actually smaller than I thought -- she's only 1 lb and 2 ounces at almost 8 months old. All 3 vets highly recommended that I:

1. Wait until she's older

2. Wait until all of her adult teeth come in (so that we can do everything in one operation)

3. Help her gain a few more ounces (about 2-3 ounces max -- it may not sound like a lot but for her tiny frame it's plenty)

4. Have a team of specialists perform the operation

Spaying her will be VERY expensive (we're talking anywhere from $1,500 - $2,000). Plus, they will want to run a series of blood tests before the operation and keep her in the animal hopsital after the operation for a few days or until they feel it's safe to bring her home.

Other than that, all 3 vets agreed that Cali is an extremely well bred and healthy dog. They said she may be small but she's very healthy. They all loved her and were kissing her the entire visit. And she was just lapping up all the attention ... the little ham.

So please, if anyone knows what I should feed Cali or any supplements to help her gain a few ounces, please please please let me know!

PS - I've been thinking about the pros and cons of spaying. I am a firm believer in spaying/neutering your pets (unless they are being used for breeding). But I don't want to send my baby off for a routine spay only to lose her. I just don't know what to do. I don't have to make a decision now (I have time still) and I will definitely meet with a wide variety of different specialists and get their opinions on the situation. Any ideas?
